Do's & Don'ts

Do:

1. Be on time!
2. Take care of your patients, you are their doctor.
3. Take the initiative in caring for your patients. Take a pro-active stance in the direct care of your patient's needs.
4. Be a member of your team. This means consuming and providing your fair share of educational resources.
5. Use your patient's clinical issues as a springboard for investigation
6. Think for yourself. Many a diagnosis has been made by a conscientious student.
7. Maintain professional standards of behavior at all times.
8. Seek appropriate supervision for decisions and actions.
9. Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
10. Be sure all your notes are co-signed.
11. Learn and have fun!

Don't:

1. Fail to show up.
2. Abandon clinical care to go to the library or to study. It is important to read in the clerkship, but the primary active is based on patient care.
3. Don't hold back. If you fall behind, the intern will make all the decisions for your patient.
4. Don't be afraid to speak up. If you noticed something, or feel that urgent attention is needed, SPEAK UP!
5. Don't put in orders without direct supervision.
